The "One Book, One
Community" project brought together people
from seven towns around Sturbridge for book discussions,
a concert by singer and songwriter Gordon Bok, a storytelling
evening with local celebrities, and a visit by Linda
Greenlaw, the author of the "one" book, The
Lobster Chronicles.
At the beginning of the project,
we wooed Linda Greenlaw with a unique knit cap and a
special calendar; then we authored and designed a website
for our advisory committee and partners. Later, we also
authored and designed a whimsical
public website.
(Linda Greenlaw later told
us that the knit "lobsters and stars cap" —Library
Director Ellie Chesebrough's creation, and the fishy
poem calendar by Susan Edwards and Margo Giroux of extramile.com,
clinched the deal. She would set aside her work to visit
us!)
We wrote press releases and created
the following promotions to get people interested in
the project :
lobster trap gift boxes
aprons
2 clams off coupon
lobster door hangers
discussion tackle box
seafood recipes
posters
buttons
invitations
brochures
chance at 6 lobsters
large A-frame sign
We prepared display kits for library
personnel and friends to make it easy for them to take
the promotional materials and put them at local cafes,
ATM machines, or wherever people have to stand and wait.
