Web Site Sub Pages - Banner
Art by Local Artist
The
sub pages on the Wheeler Memorial Library web site
are graced by drawings by local artist Ardath Garfield who
provided these wonderfully whimsical "coloring
book" drawings. Sometimes we print out a page
of the drawings and encourage our children or teens
to suggest new coloring schemes.
New Books and Videos
Every
month, we make a list of the new books which come into
the library and publish it on our web site, linked
from our "What to Read"
page. On the new books page, we include a link back
to the CWMARS catalog so that our readers can reserve
the books online. We also include links to all of the
"back issues" as well, so you can see all
of the new material that has arrived in the last year
(Fig. 1).
We Take the Library to
Seniors
We take
good care of our seniors, who come to the library for
discussion groups and computer classes. We also supply
the local Senior Center with books, changing the selection
once a month. We're especially proud of our Homebound
Delivery Service, delivering videos ("Reels
on Wheels"),
CDs, books and magazines to seniors who can't make
it to the library
(Fig. 2).
We Bring Teens to the
Library
We pay particular
attention to our teens. In a town where there is precious
little for a teenager to do, the library has become
a fun (and wholesome) alternative to the street corner.
Many of our teens drop in to play games on our computers,
but stay to do homework research, write stories, and
find tips on teen safety and getting into college..
Since Orange has one of the lowest percentages of college-educated
people in the state of Massacusetts, the library can
be one of the few places in the town where a teenager
might get inspired to reach for more education
(Fig. 3).
We Encourage Families
Our
Children's Page has dozens and dozens of terrific Internet
links for children and parents - special search engines
just for kids, kids' databases and encyclopedias, book
reviews, games and puzzles, and a list of links especially
for parents and families, including ways to ensure
safe web browsing for children. We promote our weekly
Storytimes for Children and our monthly Family Game
Nights on our Children's Page
(Fig. 4).
